You have the choice. The mages in the Tower didn’t. Being forced to live somewhere, even somewhere fairly spacious and full of books, is still being imprisoned. They were still guarded by the Templars, and there’s sufficient information out there to assume that at least some Templar were abusing the mages.
Saying “hey, it has tons of books, I’d love to live there” is a disingenuous argument. You’d love to live there, as a teenager or adult who has the choice. I’m pretty sure that if you were a child who’d been taken away from your family and basically imprisoned, all those books wouldn’t be that much of a comfort when you thought about the fact that you’d only be allowed to leave if the Templars signed off on it. A pretty prison with some nice amenities is still a prison for the person that didn’t go there willingly.
